Mae Shelton Obituary

On the evening of Monday, June 23, 2025, the Lord called from labor to reward our beloved Sister Mae R. Shelter. She was born July 20, 1952 in Stuttgart, AR to the late Robert Joseph and Addie Beatrice Owens.

She was educated in the Stuttgart School System and graduated from Stuttgart High School in the proud Class of 1971. After graduation, her first job was at Stuttgart Memorial Hospital, with other jobs including Rose Care Convalescent Home and Child Development Institute (CDI).

At an early age, Sister Shelton became a member of (Holy) Benton Temple Church of God in Christ under the leadership of the late Elder C.L. Benton, where she remained a faithful member under the leadership of Superintendent Lawrence O'Neal.

She was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Willis Dewayne Shelton in 1974. To this union five children were born. She became a widow at a young age, however, she was determined that her children would never suffer from the lack of love, food, clothing or shelter. She loved being a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She rarely missed church and was known for having her children (when they were still at home) and later her grandchildren, dressed and ready to be picked up for church.

She also enjoyed shopping, catching all the bargains she could for her family; participating in church activities, and traveling whenever  possible. Though she was quiet and unassuming, she has left a loud legacy.

Sister Shelton was preceded in death by her parents: Robert Joseph and Addie Beatrice Owens; her husband: Willis Dewayne Shelton; one sister: Vester Butler; a close cousin/friend: Sherry Thompson; and a granddaughter: Jakera Shelton.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories four sons: Timmy, Gary, Derrik and Garrett (Keisha) Shelton; one daughter: Shanna Renee Shelton; one sister: Betty L. Johnson; 18 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; her best friend: Josephine Richardson; 2 special nieces: Nina Avery and Katherine Walker-Johnson; and many other relatives, saints and friends.
