John Leroy Davis was born October 9, 1951 in Eagles Mills, Arkansas to late Napoleon Davis, Sr. and late Margaree Juniel (Davis) Torrence. John was the fourth born of eight siblings. He united at an early age to the White Springs A.M.E, where his parents and family instilled the value of Christianity. He was the byproduct of a strong, praying Christian mother, along with loving Uncles, especially his Uncle Reverend Milas Juniel.
John was raised, rooted and grounded in Bearden, Arkansas. He also spent a few of his earlier years in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He received his formal education in Bearden High School, where he graduated in 1970.
John met and married his wife Rose Green in Bearden. Looks like fate was in the making. John’s birth certificate shows he was delivered by none other than midwife Hattie Green, who is the maternal grandmother of his wife. Life is funny like that. They were joined in Holy Matrimony on August 25, 1979. They moved to Little Rock, Arkansas in 1981, established and built a home and started a family. They shared 42 wonderful years together. They were blessed with two beautiful children, John Brynell and Roshunda.
John rededicated his life to serving Christ. He united with Canaan Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of his former high school principal, Reverend W. T. Keaton. He served in the Men’s Ministry, a dutiful Usher in the Usher’s Ministry, where he was voted as Canaan’s Youth Choice Award Usher of the Year in 2014. He also supported his wife in the Brown Sack Outreach Ministry. John served faithfully at Canaan under the leadership of Pastor D.A. Witcher until his transition the other day.
Throughout his life, he worked in several fields of manufacturing, but he spent 25 years combined at Holly Brown Meat Packing and Odom’s Tennessee Pride Meat Packing. He worked five years at Arkansas Democrat Gazette. In 2013 he turned in his work uniform for retirement. John always said he retired early so he could enjoy some of the benefits he has sown. He enjoyed watching WWF wrestling, listening to the Mighty Clouds of Joy and Lee Williams. His favorite songs were “Living Testimony” and “Cooling Water”. John loved going to church, and he loved the Lord. He had a faith that everything will be alright, no matter what.
John departed this earthly journey on Monday, December 27, 2021. He was preceded in death by parents Napoleon Davis, Sr. and Margaree Juniel (Davis) Torrence and his brothers James Curtis Davis, Sr., David Torrence and Cleophus Torrence.
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 42 years, Rose Davis and two children John Brynell Davis and Roshunda Davis, all of Little Rock, AR. He is mourned by his siblings Mary (Louis) Lee of Inglewood, CA, Margaret Hicks of Flint, MI, Napoleon (Vickie) Davis of Stuttgart, AR and Mattie Torrence of Inglewood, CA; sisters-in-law Lula Mae Davis and Linda Fricks Murrell, both of Bearden, AR; three grandchildren Aryell Davis, Kaleb Davis and Ja’liyah Harris, all of Little Rock, AR; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
