Herod ("June") Abston, Jr.

Herod Abston, Jr., affectionately known as June, was born on August 16, 1941 to Herod Abston, Sr. and Addie McClair-Abston in Holly Grove, Arkansas. He was later reared by Annie Abston.

He confessed his life to the Lord at an early age at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church in Holly Grove, under the leadership of Pastor E.C. Goldsberry.

He was united in holy matrimony to Mary Helen Amos-Abston, and to that union, six children were born.

June attended school in Holly Grove. He held various jobs throughout his life. He was last employed by Riceland Foods of Stuttgart, Arkansas.

He enjoyed fishing and spending time with family and friends. His favorite meal was fish and ‘big daddy’ fries.

June departed this life on Tuesday, March 15, 2022 surrounded by family. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother; wife of 46 years Mary Helen Abston; two sons Tony Lamont Abston and Darrell Abston; four sisters Mary Hill, Verla Mae Dismuke, Opal Postley, and Shirley Mae Davenport; three grandchildren Danielle Shanta Wiley, Dymitri Jarel Jones, and Shametra Russell; and one great-grandchild Khamari Bradford.

June leaves to cherish his memory five children Shirley Jones (Tony) Dawson, Herod Abston III, Felicia (Macy) Henderson, all of Clarendon, AR, Melissa (Norman) Russell of Brinkley, AR and Donna Marie (LenTonio) Payton of LaMesa, CA; fifteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; two sisters Eunice Abston of San Diego, CA and Marlene Goodrich of Clarendon, AR; two long time friends Earnest Dawson of Clarendon, AR and Robert Culp of Monroe, AR; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
