Charles Johnson Obituary

Charles Wayne Johnson, age 71, of Park Forest, Illinois went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 26, 2022. He was born on July 9, 1950 to Charlie and Grace Davis Johnson in Stuttgart, Arkansas. He was the first child born to this union.

He graduated from Holman High School in Stuttgart, Class of 1969. Go Yellow Jackets! After graduation, Charles attended Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi on a football scholarship then later transferred to the University of Pine Bluff in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

In 1973 Charles married the love of his life, Mattie Flowers. To this union two sons were born, Carlos and Dustin. After marriage he relocated to Chicago, Illinois.

He gave and dedicated his life to the Lord at Vernon Park Church of God under the leadership of Reverends Claude and Addie Wyatt. Charles was very active in various ministries and functions of the church. He was called to be a minister in 1977 and was later ordained.

Charles and his family worshipped at the First Church of God in Harvey, Illinois for many years. Approximately ten years ago, he became their Senior Pastor. He had great love for his church, congregants, and friends.

He enjoyed various hobbies including photography, fishing, hunting, golfing, and cooking. He was a true Chicago White Sox fan. In addition, Charles was an employee of the franchise and retired after many years of service. He was an active member of various organizations including the South Suburban Concerned Clergy (SSCC).

Charles’ heart was full of love. He was a devoted family man, loving husband, and father. His deep love extended to everyone in his immediate and extended family. He truly had a kind heart and quick wit. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his father Charlie Johnson, his son Carlos Johnson, and his sister Margo Hall.

Charles is survived by his loving wife Mattie Johnson and their son Dustin Johnson, both of Park Forest, IL; mother Grace Johnson of Stuttgart, AR; siblings Booker T. (Mary) Johnson of Stuttgart, AR, Nathaniel Johnson and Milton Taylor, both of Memphis, TN, Linda Jones of Humphrey, AR, and Nadine Taylor of Stuttgart, AR; brothers-in-law Robert (Adrienne) Flowers of Chicago, IL and Kenneth Hall of St. Louis, MO; goddaughters Janyce Tolbert-Exum and Jean Donaldson-Varner; his loyal canine “grandbaby” Bella; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
