Bernard Montgomery Obituary

Our beloved Father, Brother, Uncle, and Grandfather transitioned peacefully at his home on January 14, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Bernard C. Montgomery was born March 13, 1949 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Verne Montgomery and Lorraine C. McGee.  He was a proud graduate of Flint Northwestern High School, Class of 1966. Shortly after graduation, Bernard enlisted to proudly serve our country in the Navy and proudly served on the USS Bordelon and the USS Mauna Loa.

After faithfully serving his country, Bernard found great pleasure in cross country truck driving for over 30 years. During his many trips, he created great memories, met new friends and fostered a love for the great open road. Bernard was also a great family historian and could name almost every person from the beginning of time up to the present day. He took great pride in his historical knowledge and would talk for hours sharing his vast memory of generational legacies. He was a proud member of the American Legion, Post 220, Mound     Bayou, MS, an active naval veteran participating in several clubs, veterans’ alumni socials, and other celebratory events.

Affectionately known as ‘Red’ and ‘Preacher’, Bernard was a die-hard New Orleans Saints fan, and we wouldn’t be shocked if his last words were “Who-Dat”!

After hanging up his CB and “keep on trucking” belt buckle, Bernard could not just settle in one place. He continued to obtain several trucking and light construction/demolitions jobs throughout Mississippi and Tennessee to keep him young at heart. As his health began to decline, he decided to relocate to Riviera Beach, Florida, where he took his last ‘Who-Dat’ peacefully in his sleep.

To cherish his memories, he leaves his two sons Jose (Sharrise) Spearman of Indianapolis, IN and Grant L. (Sabrina) Montgomery of Fort Lauderdale, FL; three daughters Shawne Montgomery of Saginaw, MI, Bianca Montgomery of Nashville, TN and Brooke (Curtis) Thomas of Little Rock, AR; several loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother Vance E. Montgomery of Fort Lauderdale, FL; two sisters Fay E. Montgomery of Riviera Beach, FL and Lorna (Walter) Goodlow- Houston of Horn Lake, MS; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a special friend Mrs. Mary Ellen Haynes. He was preceded in death by many family members, too great to list, but never forgotten.
