Barbara Dedrick Obituary

Barbara Jene Flournoy-Dedrick was born September 16, 1946 in Sherrill, Arkansas to the late Richard Flournoy, Sr. and Maeanna Flournoy.  She was the second born of six children.  She transitioned her life on Wednesday, July 28, 2021 surrounded by her family.

She accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at an early age, where she attended Allen Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Stuttgart, Arkansas.  Upon moving to Flint, Michigan, she later became a member of North Star Missionary Baptist Church in Flint under the leadership of Pastor James Flower.

Barbara attended Holman High School in Stuttgart, Class of 1966. She was one of Holman’s sweethearts by division 11-2.  She was also a majorette.

Barbara started her working career at Stuttgart Memorial Hospital as a Nursing Assistant.  She worked there for several years.  She had a passion for helping others.  She moved to Flint, Michigan in 1975, where she began a career working at Kith Haven Nursing Rehabilitation as a Patient Care Assistant until she retired in 2011.

She was very family-oriented, and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. One of her passions was cooking.  Whenever we had family gatherings, we would make sure Barbara brought candied yams and spaghetti salad.  It was to die for. In addition, she enjoyed going on cruises and visiting places, such as the Bahamas, St. Thomas Virgin Island, and St. Maarten.

She married John L. Scales, and to this union they were blessed with two sons John L. Scales, Jr. and Jerid Scales. John L. preceded her in death.  She married Larance Dedrick in 1993, and they shared many years of marital bliss until the Lord called him home in 2014.  After his death, she moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

She is preceded in death by her parents Richard Flournoy, Sr. and Maeanna Flournoy, her beloved husband Larance Dedrick, two brothers Lee Arthur Flournoy and Richard Flournoy, Jr., one sister Glory Flournoy-Releford, and one nephew Roderick Flournoy.

Barbara leaves to cherish her memory two devoted sons John (Toni) L. Scales of Chula Vista, CA and Jerid (Leslie) Scales of Pine Bluff, AR; one loving sister Charline Tidwell of Pine Bluff, AR; one devoted brother Elder Theodies (Orlease) Flournoy of Lexington, MS; nine beautiful grandchildren whom she adored Jerica Scales, Cordarol Scales, Neisha (Anthony) Scales-Munz, Sharrica Scales, John L. Scales III, Lonnie Frazier, Aklia Frazier, Diamond Scales, and Maya Lamrock; eight great grandchildren who were her heart Trae Corthion, Dalan Murry, McKenzie Murry, Ava Munz, Annalia Frazier, Conner Colbert, Demetri Scales, and Michael Munz; three nephews David L. King, Jr., Timothy (Yolanda) Releford and Larry (Charlotte) McFarland; six nieces Tosha Flournoy, Treloni Flournoy, Lakesha (Lamont) Morris, LaSundra Flournoy, Cecily (Paul) Flournoy-Thomas, and Lynette Flournoy; two step-daughters Lawanda Osborn and LaShanda Osborn, both of Flint, MI; two step-sons Larance Lee and Larry Osborn, both of Flint, MI; two sisters-in-law Shirley Flournoy of Jonesboro, AR and Izella Flournoy of Stuttgart, AR; best friend/daughter Natalie Fells-Miller of Pine Bluff, AR; and a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.  She will live forever in the hearts of her family.

"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away."  Revelation 21:4
