Blessed Lineage
Mrs. Alice Phillips Butler was born December 1, 1924, to the late Lem Phillips & Margia Whitaker Phillips of Crocketts Bluff, Arkansas. Mrs. Butler grew up in a very religious home with nine siblings, five girls and four boys. She participated in the family farm by helping plant the garden and working in the fields picking cotton. Growing up on the family farm, she often told stories of when all the food she ate was home grown, except flour and sugar.
All of Mrs. Butler’s siblings were baptized at St. Olive Missionary Baptist Church. She was baptized at an early age and maintained an active membership at St. Olive Baptist Church throughout her life. She used her talent and educational background to serve as the Church Clerk, Sunday School Teacher, Youth Director, Youth Director of the White River District and Adult Teacher of the White River District.
Blessed Education and Career
Mrs. Butler attended elementary school in grades 1-4 at St. Olive Church and in grades 5-12 at Immanuel School in Almyra, AR. She graduated high school in 1944 and was Salutatorian of her class. Mrs. Butler continued her education, attending AM&N College, now known as the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, receiving an ABSE degree in education. She completed further studies at the University of Little Rock, AR. After receiving her degree, Mrs. Butler taught school for 33 consecutive years in the St. Charles School District and one year in District 60.
