Lee Sims Obituary

Lee Mathis Sims was born on November 24, 1936. He was the oldest child of the late Gurnett “Hubbie” Sims and the late Ada Hogan-Timmons. He was raised by his beloved maternal grandparents, the late Cecil “Cece” Hogan and Ella Noble-Hogan, who affectionately called him “Red”. On Sunday, June 26, 1966, Lee Mathis married his first and only love, Thelma Mitchell-Sims. Together they created four children: Felicia Ann, Mae Helen, Lacey Michelle and Terry Lee. Lee Mathis departed his earthly home on Tuesday, January 30, 2018.

Lee Mathis accepted Christ at an early age. At the age of 16, he began humbly serving the Lord as a Deacon at Liberty Missionary Baptist Church in Lookout, AR. He later joined St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Roe, AR, faithfully serving for 50 years. His love and devotion to living for Christ was always on the forefront of his mind.

Lee Mathis graduated from Immanuel School located in Almyra, AR. He was a gifted shepherd who earned various veterinarian certifications. In the early 1990’s, he was initiated as an Entered Apprentice of the Free and Accepted Masons. In 2017, he passed to the degree of a Fellow Craft and raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason. He diligently served the DeWitt Masonic Lodge #343, M.W. Prince Hall Grand Lodge F.& A.M. of Arkansas.

His legacy is one of honor, integrity, love and devotion. He will be remembered for selflessly giving of himself to his family, friends and community. Lee Mathis truly embodied the “Fruits of the Spirit” in his walk of life. This soft-spoken man embraced everyone he met with a smile, courtesy and respect. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, loyal friend, and faithful servant of God. He was a shepherd who diligently tended his herd.

Lee Mathis Sims leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife of 51 years, Thelma Mitchell-Sims; three children: Felicia Ann (Van Buren) Jones of Colorado Springs, CO, Lacey Sims Barnes of Marion, AR and Terry Lee Sims; one child, Mae Helen, preceded him in death; seven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; one great grand child Vegazz Ka'Lize' Khloee' Qualls; one brother Wilson Timmons, Jr.; one sister Bessie (Joe) Jeffery; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
